The Directorate of University Health Services (DUHS) of the University of Cape Coast (UCC) comprises the University Hospital and the Environmental Health Section. The University Hospital began as a clinic in 1963 attached to Adehye Hall. It was initially established to cater for the health needs of students, staff and their dependents but now responsible for the provision of preventive and curative health services to the University community and the general public. The Environmental Health Section handles all environmentally related hygienic practices including cleaning, dislodging of faecal waste, spraying and fumigation services.
The University Hospital has been recognized by the Ministry of Health (MOH) as one of the most distinguished Hospitals in the country, as the Hospital was handed the BEST Private Hospital in the Central Region in 2013 at the National Health Awards. The Facility is a member of the Ghana Association of Quasi-Health Institutions (GAQHI) and a Sub-district of the Cape Coast Metropolitan Health Directorate. It is an 80 bed-capacity facility which has a catchment population of 35,624 (excluding students and workers population).
Our vision is to have a University Health Services that is strongly positioned with a nationwide acclaim. As we remain the Health Services of choice in the Cape Coast Metropolis, our mission is to remain an equal opportunity health facility uniquely placed to provide quality health services in the most professional, patient oriented and patient friendly manner. We aim at providing quality driven healthcare to its clients, building the most qualified, dedicated and highly motivated workforce for appropriate healthcare delivery, and ensuring client focused and friendly environment appropriate for quality healthcare delivery. It is also our goal to create avenues for developing leaders for the future sustenance of services provided, and ensuring a clean and serene University environment to promote academic work and research. The objective is to better meet the new healthcare options, improve patient care by employing the state of the art expertise and technology and by moving beyond the hospital walls to our local community and the world. The Management and Staff of the Directorate cherish professionalism, high ethical standards, discipline, excellence, sustainable healthy environment, teamwork, and stakeholder involvement.
DUHS provides services that include; Out-patient, In-patient, Specialised (Dental, ENT), Surgical, Obstetrics & Gynaecology, Pharmaceutical, HIV/AIDS Counselling, Diagnostic (Laboratory, X-ray, ECG, Ultra Sound Scan), Physiotherapy, Outreach (Reproductive and Child Health, Family planning, Students’ Clinic), and Mortuary. The Facility also provides clinics on Hypertension, Diabetes, Sickle Cell, Hepatitis, and Anaesthesia. We also conduct and disseminate health research within and beyond the University community. Our Facility runs a Patient Clinical & Health Information System (PHIS) that enables prescribers and caregivers to employ technology for quality care delivery.
